Toyota FT-86 Open Concept

Outside the U.S., the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ is sold under the Toyota FT-86 badge. Originally spotted back in 2013, Toyota has unveiled an updated (or at least repainted) version of its convertible concept, based on the FT-86, and it’s a real looker. Just look at this candy apple red beauty.

While Subaru (who manufactures the platform) continue to decline plans for a production version, we can’t resist the thought. While we’ve never driven the FT-86, we have been behind the wheel of both the FR-S and BRZ, and the thought of zipping around switchbacks in a drop-top version of any of these cars leaves us with a big smile on our faces. Unfortunately, Subaru Chief Yasuyuki Yoshinaga believes the chassis would require a complete redesign in order to safely support a convertible design, so it’s unlikely to go into production any time soon. We can dream, can’t we?
