Lister Bell STR Lancia Stratos Kit Car

Written by Paul Strauss | December 11, 2013

While Bertone’s original Lancia Stratos is truly one of the most spectacular cars of all time, most of us mere mortals could never afford to buy one, at least not in drivable condition. Over the years, there have been numerous attempts to recreate the design of the Stratos with kit cars. While most of them are less than spectacular, Autocar’s Steve Sutcliffe got his hands on the new Lister Bell STR kit, and was duly impressed with what he found.

There’s no question that the car looks amazing. But how does it drive? It’s powered by a 2.5-liter Alfa Romeo V6, pushing out approximately 220hp. Incredibly, the car is built on the engine and six-speed manual gearbox from an Alfa Romeo 166, possibly one of the homeliest cars ever made. So it’s even more special that the STR drives like a bat out of hell. It doesn’t hurt that they’ve moved the engine to the rear of the car, using their own custom chassis. Plus, that exhaust system sounds really special too. You’ll want to watch the video to check out Steve’s full review, but the conclusion was that the STR actually drives even better than it looks.

The Lister Bell STR kit sells for about £30,000 (~$50,000 USD), but you’re looking at closer to £40,000 (~$65,000 USD) for a complete car. Still, that’s a far cry from the $250,000-$400,000 you’d pay for an actual Stratos.
