Autosport managed to score a very special face-to-face with Nissan’s hybrid electric ZEOD RC Le Mans race car on the track.  UK Formula 3 racer Jann Mardenborough was the lucky driver who got to sit behind the controls.

The delta-winged vehicle looks almost like the Space Shuttle when viewed from above. It can run on either gasoline or pure electric power on-demand, and offers a five-speed manual transmission unlike most electrics and hybrids. Top speed for the car is rated at 300 km/h (~186MPH). Nissan plans on racing the ZEOD RC in the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans, though most of the race will be run on gas power, with the electric only being used for a small percentage of the laps.

For more about Autosport’s experiences behind the wheel of this futuristic vehicle, you’ll need to pick up the Christmas 2013 issue of the magazine, which you can grab in digital form for just $3.
