2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé

We just saw the S-Class Concept Coupé at the Detroit Auto Show last month, and now we’ve got an actual vehicle headed to dealers later this year. The production model blends the the substance and size the S-Class is known for with sportiness and power.

The luxurious S500 Coupé will arrive in the U.S. this Fall with a 4.7-liter V8 biturbo engine mated to a 4MATIC transmission. The engine will provide a generous 449 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque. And for those looking for some sound to go with that power, there’s a switch which lets you open or close exhaust silencer flaps to allow for a more throaty exhaust sound.

Visually, the car is quite stunning, with deep creases on its hood and alongside the body, and frameless doors. The large, grille is distinctly Benz, with a bit of an aeronautical feel to it. Flanking each side of the grille are full LED headlamps with distinctive accent lighting. Those who opt for the special edition will find the headlamps have been bejeweled with swarovski crystals for a bit more sparkle. The whole car rides on large 18 to 20-inch wheels to give it an even more muscular feel.

Inside, Mercedes spares no expense, offering high-end finishes including nappa leather, and elegant electroplated metal trim in a style they call “Silver Shadow” (say isn’t that a Rolls Royce trademark?)

One unique feature of the S-Class Coupé will be something called “active curve tilting,” which helps the vehicle lean into curves like a motorcycle – a really big motorcycle, that is. This system is designed to reduce lateral acceleration for the vehicle’s occupants, resulting in a more enjoyable ride and comfort. It uses a combination of cameras which observe the curvature of the upcoming road, an acceleration sensor and hydraulically adjustable struts to work its magic.

Of course, the car will offer a variety of available electronic systems to improve driving and safety, including braking with pedestrian detection, cross-traffic assist, active lane keeping assist, adaptive high-beam assist, among other features.

Oh, and don’t forget to splurge and go for the heated massage seats.
