Jay Leno received the first McLaren P1 to be delivered to the United States. McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt dropped by Leno’s garage to talk about creating the new P1 supercar. Only 375 of the highly anticipated car will be built and deciding on that number was a difficult decision after selling fewer McLaren F1s than expected, but the P1 is now sold out with a waiting list. With each P1 selling for about $1.15 million, that’s quite a feat.

McLaren set out to create a true driver’s car that wouldn’t be set aside in a collection waiting to be resold. And Flewitt explains how the team approached the development of the P1 to achieve that goal. Then the two hop in the car for a drive through the hills around Los Angeles. At one point, Leno tries to get the head of McLaren to reveal the P1’s actual Nürburgring lap time, but Flewitt still won’t tell.

Leno is truly impressed with his new P1 and he has already put thousands of miles on it, duly impressed with its ability as a road car – not just on the track. He compares it to driving a lightweight Lotus but with a 903 horsepower engine behind you that makes the purring sounds of a liger.
