Formula Offroad Driver Loses Steering Wheel

Written by Paul Strauss | October 15, 2014

Having personally raced in a stock car which had a quick-release steering wheel, I was always worried that the wheel might come off in my hands if not secured well. In this video, we get a look at exactly why this could be a problem.

During a Formula Offroad event in Iceland, driver Ingólfur Guðvarðarson was about to make his way to the top of a hill, when the unthinkable happened – the wheel came off in his hands. The driver immediately lost control of the car, then crashed back down the hill in a spectacular fashion, in a scene which rapidly wavers between comedic and frightening.

Fortunately, these cars are almost all roll cage, and are built to take serious abuse. Guðvarðarson not only was uninjured, but he was able to drive his car again after just a little bit of work in the pits.

And this, my friends, is why you always double-check the quick-release on racing wheels.
