DeLorean Motor Company Goes Back to the Past

By the time Marty McFly entered cinema immortality, the DeLorean factory had already passed on to the parts bin of history. But when it closed in 1982, the factory contained a treasure trove of spare parts, along with roughly 1700-1800 completed vehicles. In a strictly business deal, a company called Consolidated International acquired the inventory, sold off the completed vehicles, and sat on the parts.

In 1997, along came Stephen Wynne, who had made a career fixing DeLoreans. He purchased the parts inventory and relocated the lot to his shop in Humble, Texas. Wynne set about servicing and restoring DeLoreans, but he also took things a step further. After all, of the 2,800 parts that make up a DeLorean, Wynne’s company has access to over 99 percent. Why not make brand new vehicles?

With approximately 1,000 DeLorean doors at his disposal, roughly split evenly driver and passenger side, Wynne and his team can produce roughly 500 shiny new DeLoreans. Hoverboard not included.
