How the AMC Gremlin Tried to Compete with the VW Bug

This is how they did it in the days before Microsoft PowerPoint. Greg’s Automotive dug up this awesomely retro bit of automotive history which features a sales training presentation for the original 1970 AMC Gremlin.

The film, titled “Gremlin: The New American Car” offers up arguments about performance and design as it goes up against the imports and its top competitor – the Volkswagen Beetle, along with its fans the “Bug Boosters.” AMC focused mainly on the size advantages of the Gremlin, which was much wider than the bug, along with AMC’s much more powerful 128 horsepower V6 engine that got 23 mpg – just 3 mpg less than the 57 horsepower VW Bug.

Before you go pointing out the way they spelled “Datson” in the film, that’s actually how it was spelled at one time… back in the 1930s. While the Gremlin wasn’t a great car when all was said and done, nor did it have the staying power of the Beetle, it’s still one of the most iconic American vehicles of the 1970s.
