Drag Racing on Sand

We recently had the chance to see Top Fuel dragsters work their magic on a proper drag strip, and thought that was pretty insane. So the idea of taking these high horsepower bombs on wheels onto sand is beyond nuts. But that’s exactly what sand dragging is about. In this clip from Enjoy the Drive, you’ll see driver Dennis Rieck take to the dirt of Arizona’s Dome Valley Raceway in his 7,000 horsepower dragster, leaving huge plumes of sand and dust in its wake – in case the nitromethane fumes weren’t enough.

Sand draggers claim that their cars are even faster than NHRA dragsters as they don’t have the benefit of slicks and asphalt beneath their cars, but given the fact that they “only” go 300 feet in just over 2 seconds, and NHRA dragsters do 1000 feet in under 4 seconds, we’re still giving the edge to traditional drag racing.
