Car companies maintain a wide variety of methods for testing out the driving characteristics of their cars. While an actual race track is probably the best way to go hands-on with a car, sometimes vehicles aren’t yet ready to be driven, or weather conditions prevent testing. That’s where virtual reality simulations come into play.

In the case of Porsche, they’re using a high-tech driving simulator to see how their 919 hybrid racer will handle in the LMP1 prototype division of LeMans. The system is capable of simulating a wide variety of of environments, as well as using precise physics models to replicate the handling of the actual vehicle.

Check out the video clip for a brief look at the LMP1 driving simulator in action. Too bad this thing isn’t an amusement park ride – we’d love to take it for a spin. Or better yet, the actual Porsche 919.
