From the Vaults: Hilarious Karmann Ghia Commercial

by Paul Strauss

The Karmann Ghia is one of the most iconic cars ever made by Volkswagen. Produced from 1957 to 1974, the 2+2 coupe and convertible cars are immediately recognizable and are a joyful little ride.

But even VW knew from the get-go that the Karmann Ghia wasn’t going to keep up with high-end sports cars. In this commercial that dates back to the late 1960s or early 1970s, Volkswagen touts the economical pricing of the car, but also embraces the fact that with its Beetle-sourced 60 horsepower engine, it certainly wasn’t the fastest car you could buy.

We sure miss this sort of honesty from today’s ad campaigns.
