Behind the Wheel of Steve McQueen’s Ferrari 250 GT

Nick Rufford of The Sunday Times had the rare chance to get behind the wheel of Steve McQueen’s favorite car: his 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. The car was recently auctioned by Christie’s for a cool $2.3 million.

Rufford spent months trying to test drive this car after hearing that the buyer was located in Britain and had been shipped over. Ferrari was able to help him track down the owner and arrange for the drive under two conditions: (1) the owner must remain anonymous and (2) don’t damage the car. Unfortunately, the day begins during a hailstorm, but Rufford doesn’t seem to mind since he has one of the world’s great classic sports cars waiting for him. Eventually, the rain breaks and the car runs beautifully even after 50 years.

The Ferrari 250 Lusso has a 12-cylinder 250 horsepower engine with four-speed manual transmission. The car had a top speed when new of 150 mph but Rufford has no intention of seeing what she’ll do today.
