Porsche’s resident historian Dieter Landenberger takes us inside the Porsche museum to look at the fully restored San Remo Rally 911 SC, which was driven by Porsche racing driver Walter Rhörl in the 1981 San Remo Rally. Unfortunately, mechanical problems with the rear axle prevented him from completing the rally. Rhörl had won the rally the previous year driving a Fiat 131 Abarth and, although in the video below he and his co-driver both emphasize Porsche’s goal of beating the four-wheel drive Audis in the 1981 race, Rhörl won again in 1985 – this time driving an Audi Quattro S1.

Porsche restored the classic 911 racer and Rhörl had the chance to drive the fully restored 911 SC rally car in the Targa Tasmania race in 2011. Unfortunately, the car’s restoration apparently extended to the mechanical problem he experienced back at the 1981 San Remo Rally and similar problems in Tassie prevented him from winning.
