I’ve always wondered what could be done to improve safety in large vans and buses, which have limited protection for passengers. With their new 15-passenger edition of their Transit van, Ford has added what could be the largest automotive airbag of all time.

Ford worked with TRW Automotive to develop a side-curtain airbag measuring a whopping 15-feet-long by 3-feet-wide to help protect occupants in the event of a side-impact crash. It’s a pretty amazing feat, and definitely raises the playing field for van safety.

In addition to the side-curtain airbags, the Transit includes three-point safety belts for every seat, a stability control system to reduce rollover risk, and Ford’s SOS Post-Crash Alert System, which can help make it easier to locate the vehicle in the event of a crash.
