Virtually Test Drive a Lexus RC F via Oculus Rift

Written by Kenny Hoeschen | October 10, 2014

Lexus first showed off its new RC F sports coupe at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show and we were lucky enough to take one for a test drive back in August. But you can also take one for a spin yourself thanks to the virtual reality world provided by the Oculus Rift DK2 headset. As part of the official launch of the new vehicle, Lexus developed a motion-controlled virtual reality experience allowing guests to see and drive the car as if they are sitting in the driver’s seat.

Frankly, I don’t think the video above from Lexus does this justice. I tried blurring my eyes à la Magic Eye pictures, but that didn’t work. I thought of maybe donning my 3D glasses I use with my TV, but my wife already thinks I’m a dork. The end result is like watching two people play Gran Turismo in split screen… and a headache.

Although, to the developers’ credit, it looks like they nailed the RC F’s unique gauges.
