BMW Teases Self-Drifting Car Challenge

We already know how impressive the BMW M235i can be when put in the hands of talented drift racers. Now, BMW is putting one of its high-tech car prototypes to the test, pitting a robotic self-drifting Bimmer up against a professional (human) drifter to see who can hold a slide longer.

While I’m not sure I’d ever want an autonomous car to take over drifting on my behalf, it’s an impressive demonstration of just how far driverless cars have come in recent years. I can almost imagine an all robotic racing series at some point, where the entrants aren’t race drivers, but technologists competing for the top prize.

BMW hasn’t said when they’ll release the complete Ultimate Drift Challenge video, but this teaser is definitely enough to whet my appetite for now.
