Drifting a Toyota AE86 in the Rain

The Toyota AE86 (aka the Corolla Levin, Trueno Sprinter and Hachi-Roku) is one of those classic cars that gearheads love to talk about, but rarely get to drive. Matt Farah from The Smoking Tire was fortunate enough to go on a trip to New Zealand in which he got to check out an old 1984 Toyota Trueno.

Jared Rush’s track-prepped AE86 looks like a complete blast as its lightweight, high-revving, rear-wheel drive setup sends the little car sliding around a soaking wet side circuit at the Hutt Valley Motorsports Club. Sure, the car has just 137 horses, but it also weighs only 1,741 lbs, and drifts like a mofo.

My favorite part of the video is where we find out that Rush got the car for free from a buddy who owed him 50 bucks. “Do ya wan’ it? Yeh, I’ll have it. At’s a cah.”
