2016 Nissan Maxima

After teasing us with a brief glimpse of the car during their Super Bowl spot, Nissan has now fully revealed the new 2016 Maxima. The all new Maxima offers a much more modern look than the outgoing model, carrying across many of the design cues we saw in the Nissan Sport Sedan Concept last year.

Of particular note are the new v-shaped front end, sharply defined hood ridges, sharply defined headlamps and taillights, and an overall more sporty and more modern look. The body is much more curvaceous as well, with creases in the right places to give the new Maxima a sense of movement and fluidity.

Under the hood there’s a dramatically redesigned 3.5-liter V6 that produces 300 horsepower, while at the same time increasing fuel efficiency by 15% over the 2015 model. Nissan has also updated its Xtronic transmission to increase the overall gear ratio range, and to improve shifting when pushing the hammer down. Still, it’s a CVT, which I’m not sure belongs in any vehicle being touted as a “sport” sedan.

Nissan has also made significant strides on the interior of the new Maxima, with a much more premium look, offering two-tone materials, stitched leather details, a streamlined instrument cluster with a 7″ digital information display, and a more sporty look overall. All models include an 8″ touchscreen display with navigation, a rear view camera, and remote engine start among other things.

You’ll also be able to equip the Maxima with a wide variety of modern safety tech, including Predictive Forward Collision Warning , Intelligent Cruise Control, Forward Emergency Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Warning, as well as an all new Driver Attention Alert system, which can monitor driver alertness.

Overall, the new Maxima looks like an impressive step forward from the relatively staid current model. It will go on sale this summer, with a starting MSRP of $32,410. Nissan is currently accepting pre-sale reservations on their website now. Those who reserve early will get three years of complimentary maintenance.
