Drifting Sochi in the Toyota RocketBull86

Drifting is the automotive equivalent of primal chest thumping. Technique is important but so is noise and show. In this clip from Red Bull, Nikita “Shick” Shikov helms what appears to be a tricked-out Toyota GT86 and hammers it through the biggest curve at the Sochi Autodrom Formula One racing circuit in the Black Sea resort town of Sochi in Krasnodar Krai, Russia. Turn #3 is a 750 meter curve that seems to go on forever.

And should you think drifting is for ham-fisted, heavy footed drivers with no finesse, just realize what’s involved in making this happen. Not only does he have to approach it at just the right speed, he also has to time the flick of the wheel and the application of even throttle and smooth steering. Shick pulls it off without skipping a beat, essentially pulling off a giant powerslide. What’s become of his rear wing, though, we haven’t the faintest idea.
