U.S. Tries to Recapture World Burnout Record

Written by John Thomas | June 17, 2015

At the beginning of this year, a group of 103 gearheads gathered in Australia to all hit the gas on their rides at once to set the world record for the largest simultaneous car tire burnout. That record, however, looks like it will short lived.

Last week at the Memphis International Raceway, as part of the Hot Rod Power Tour, over 110 cars queued up side by side on the long asphalt track to spin their wheels into the record books. After a call to action – “3, 2, 1 — Go drivers go, spin those tires!!” – they were off and going nowhere really, really fast. This video captures the record-breaking attempt, but at times it’s a bit hard to see the cars because all of that incinerating rubber created more smoke than a forest fire.

My favorite part? The event was sponsored in part by Continental Tire, which seemed like a pretty brilliant marketing move given the fact that many of those 100+ cars were going to need some new rubber at the end of their spin to nowhere.
