Porsche 718 to Return in Boxster and Cayman Forms

by Shane McGlaun

Porsche has always called its sports cars by a numerical name. We all know the 911, but back in the day there were the 914, 928, 944, and many others. Porsche has now revealed that it will be bringing back the 718 name for versions of the Boxster and Cayman.

I always thought the Cayman and Boxster were more along the lines of a modern 914. After all, the 718 was an tiny, open cockpit race car, so it’s hard to see the connection. About all we know about the new 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman is that they will move to Porsche’s new turbo flat-four in place of the flat-six. You’ll want to keep an eye on the Porsche website for more information as it’s revealed.

I’m still hoping that Porsche will eventually roll out a smaller, less expensive car to revive that 914 moniker.
