Who knew the world was waiting for a faster, posher SUV? Apparently the folks at Bentley, because the Bentley Bentayga, the new apex predator of the SUV heap, sold out its first lineup year before the vehicle ever went into production. The Bentayga ticks off all the boxes you would expect from a $232,000-and-up SUV. It’s got a massive 600 hp, 6.0-liter twin turbo 12-cylinder engine that – 5,400 lbs curb weight be damned – hurls the Bentayga from 0-60 in 4.0 seconds and up to a top speed of 187 miles per hour.

Its interior is bedecked in luxury befitting a queen – Queen Elizabeth, for one, who is reported to be receiving the first Bentayga off the line. But skip ahead to about four minutes into this video, and you’ll see the Bentayga go places you can be sure the Queen, and 99.9% of other owners, will never, ever go: off-road.

The Bentayga comes equipped with a variety of off-pavement settings – snow and grass, dirt and gravel, mud and trail, and sand dune. In the mountains above Palm Springs, the team at Carfection risks bottoming out their fire-engine red Bentayga, and scratching its hand-finished paint job, to show off its SUV bonafides. The Bentayga tackles all obstacles with aplomb, so future Bentayga owners can breathe easy. Their new SUV will have no problem if they encounter a log bridge on the way to the local yacht club.
