Crazy Modded Volvo S60 T5 Makes Some Swede Sounds

My parents had a Volvo station wagon when I was in high school. Battleship gray, with a manual transmission. I drove that thing like it was a sports car. Or as I imagined it, like the heavily modified S60 T5 that Matt Farah takes for a spin on Encinal Canyon Road above Malibu in this video from The Smoking Tire. The matte grey star of this clip, owned by Taylor (mistakenly called “Tyler” by Farah at the start), sports a five-cylinder 2.4 liter T5 motor, upgraded turbo, with chassis bracing, a front-wheel drive manual and a shiny golden, “Spaceball” shifter.

As Farah and Taylor cruise over the rainy canyon roads, they chat about the spiking boost needle, but the real showstopper is the engine note from the unique five-cylinder power plant. Taylor’s S60 does not sound like any Volvo I’ve ever encountered, with a guttural roar one Youtube commenter cleverly likened to “post-industrial noise music.”

As you might imagine, the front-wheel drive leads to a few torque steer complaints from Farah, but that doesn’t dampen his enthusiasm for this Swedish oddball. “This car is so fun. It’s really different, and weird, and cool,” Farah says. “I love it.”
