Hyundai Kona N Teased: KONA N The Barbarian

The Hyundai Kona is one of my favorite compact crossovers at the moment, offering sporty and modern looks, solid handling, and versatility. Now, Hyundai’s N division is teasing a version of the car that’s designed for performance.

While we don’t know all of the technical details of the Kona N yet, I’ve heard it’s getting the same 2.0-liter turbo engine found Veloster N and the i30 N, a vehicle that’s not available here in the States. In that application, the engine makes 250 to 275 hp, and we can expect similar power numbers for the Kona N. I’d also expect to see a sport-tuned suspension, an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, and Hyundai has already confirmed a dual muffler, dual exhaust system. With the regular Kona available in all-wheel-drive, I’m holding out hope that we might get that in the Kona N rather than just front-wheel-drive.

Aesthetically, the Kona N looks pretty badass too, with a menacing new grille, additional air intakes, a double-wing roof spoiler, and a rear diffuser. A triangular rear upper brake light, special allow rims, and red accents are all part of the N package too.

That’s all we know for now, but I’d expect more details about the Kona N in the next couple of months, including performance specs, availability, and pricing. It’s expected to be available for the 2022 model year. While we wait, take a listen to the hot little crossover’s exhaust note:
