2022 Lexus ES Brings Tech, Safety, and Handling Updates

After completely redesigning its mid-size sedan back in 2018, Lexus is showing off the latest iteration of the ES. While the new models feature a mix of appearance and technology enhancements, the car continues to ride on the same TNGA-K platform as the current model, as well offer the same drivetrain options, including a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine making 203 hp, 3.5-liter V6 with 302 hp, and a hybrid 2.5-liter system that produces 215 hp.

The most notable changes are new grille designs that appear on all models other than the ES F SPORT from the outside. The updated mesh grille incorporates a series of concentric “L” shapes radiating from the Lexus emblem, and new bi-LED headlights incorporate dynamic auto-leveling.

Inside, you’ll find the multimedia system now has a touchscreen display, giving users an option besides the often frustrating trackpad found in the prior model. The display is available in 8″ and 12.3″ versions and is mounted 4.3″ closer to the driver, so it’s easier to reach.

The 2022 ES has also seen an upgrade to Lexus Safety System+ 2.5, which comes standard. The suite of safety features includes enhancements to the forward-facing camera and radar for better response range, along with Intersection Turning Assist, which can activate the car’s pre-collision system in some turning situations. A new Emergency Steering Assist feature can help with vehicle stability if the driver makes an evasive steering maneuver. The car’s dynamic radar cruise control now includes Curve Speed Reduction, which can automatically decrease cruise speed in certain types of curves. There have also been upgrades to Lane Tracing Assist, which should provide better lane centering and stability when changing lanes.

Lexus says it has also improved the overall handling of the ES with new rear suspension bracing and refinements to the brake system, including a larger brake pedal and tweaks to pedal feel and responsiveness. Those who opt for the top-of-the-line ES 350 F SPORT model can get a Dynamic Handling Package that adds Sport+ and Custom drive modes, as well as an Adaptive Variable Suspension.

In addition to the ES250 AWD and ES350, the hybrid ES 300h will offer an F SPORT trim this year as well, adding aesthetic upgrades like a dark grille surround, 19″ black wheels, and a trunk lid spoiler, among other additions. Pricing information for the 2022 Lexus ES has yet to be announced. The new models will land in dealerships in the Fall of 2021.
