Is a Toyota GR Corolla Coming to the US?

Something interesting is going on at Toyota. A new rumor suggests that a GR Corolla with all-wheel drive and possibly more than 260 horsepower will be coming to the US. MotorTrend cites “well-placed sources” saying that Toyota is working on the GR Corolla.

The sources say that the GR Corolla will feature all-wheel drive and possibly come with a six-speed manual transmission. It’s tipped to use a more powerful version of the 1.6-liter in-line-three cylinder engine from the GR Yaris that produces 257 horsepower in that car.

Consider that the same inline three-cylinder engine is used in the rally version of the Yaris, where it produces 375 horsepower with 332 pound-foot of torque with a restrictor plate in place, and we can see there’s plenty of room for more power. Odds are Toyota would target similar power numbers to other vehicles like the Subaru WRX or VW GTI.

We’d like to see somewhere around 300 horsepower, but power numbers remain to be seen. However much power the car makes, having another all-wheel-drive four-door sports car on the market would be a great thing. It’s unclear when Toyota might debut the car in the US, but a recent Instagram post provided several clues that seem to reinforce key parts of the rumor, including a nod to the G16E-GTS engine, and a 268 horsepower figure.
