2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Is a Sporty Little Crossover with a PHEV Option

Italian automaker Alfa Romeo has revealed its first new vehicle in a few years, the new 2023 Tonale, a small crossover SUV that shares its platform with the Fiat 500X, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Renegade. Alfa says the vehicle stays faithful to the concept version announced in 2019 while adding customer-focused features. It will be offered with two available powertrains, including a PHEV.

The Tonale PHEV Q4 AWD combines a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 90 kW electric motor with a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Together, the combustion engine and electric motor produce 272 horsepower, and the vehicle can drive 30 miles on electricity alone. The other powertrain offering is the Q4 AWD model.

The Q4 AWD utilizes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission. That engine makes 256 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque. Tonale Q4 AWD models are fitted with stop-start technology, allowing them to meet the new super-ultra-low emissions 30 standard.

All versions of the SUV have three different operation modes, including Dual Power/Dynamic, Natural, and Advanced Efficiency. Tonale gets the latest Stellantis Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch driver cluster screen. Vehicles also include a host of driver assistance and safety systems and available Level 2 autonomy with Traffic Jam Assist. Alfa will offer Sprint, Ti, and Veloce models with orders opening in Q4 2022 and the first vehicles shipping in Q1 2023. Pricing is unannounced.
