Lexus just took the wraps off the new 2026 ES, debuting its latest luxury sedan at the Shanghai Motor Show. As one of the brand’s longest-running nameplates, the ES has always been known for its smooth ride, quiet cabin, and refined styling. But the eighth-generation model isn’t just an update, it’s a completely new car. With a futuristic design inspired by the LF-ZC concept, cutting-edge technology, and a fully electrified lineup, the 2026 ES marks a new era for Lexus sedans.
Built on the updated GA-K platform, the ES benefits from increased rigidity and a lower center of gravity, delivering improved handling and even better ride comfort than its predecessor. Lexus also made major gains in cabin refinement, with extensive efforts to enhance quietness and smoothness at every speed. The new model is about 6.5 inches longer than before, and its wheelbase has increased by 3 inches.
The first Lexus vehicle to offer both hybrid (HEV) and full battery-electric (BEV) powertrains, the new ES reflects Lexus’ commitment to carbon neutrality through what it calls a “multi-pathway approach.” Whether you’re after the fuel efficiency of the ES 300h, the all-wheel-drive versatility of the ES 350h, or the zero-emissions drive of the ES 500e BEV, Lexus has you covered. Performance specs for the base ES300h start at 194 horsepower, while the top-tier 500e churns out a combined 337 horsepower and hits 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 5.9 seconds, offering brisk performance without sacrificing serenity. Keep in mind that the performance specs for U.S. engines may vary.
Charging the BEV models won’t keep you waiting long either. The ES 500e supports 150 kW DC fast charging, which can juice up the battery from 10% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes under ideal conditions. Lexus is boasting a targeted range of up to 685 km (426 miles) for the front-wheel drive ES 350e, although that number is based on China’s CLTC specification. US EPA ratings are likely to be closer to 300 miles.
Design-wise, the new ES brings a dramatic evolution to the table. Sleek proportions, a flowing silhouette, and a minimalist, tech-forward interior set the tone for what Lexus calls the next-generation expression of elegance. Inside, it debuts two standout features: Responsive Hidden Switches – a world-first that integrates physical controls invisibly into the cabin—and Sensory Concierge, which orchestrates lighting, fragrance, and climate for a more immersive experience. I love the clean new lines of the cabin along with the incorporation of a layered bamboo trim. It’s not clear if this green interior color will make its way to U.S. cars, but it’s nice to see something other than black, grey, or red.
The seats and trim have been streamlined to maximize comfort and create an open feel. The cabin remains generously spacious, especially in the rear, making the ES an excellent choice for passengers who prefer to be chauffeured as much as they enjoy driving. An optional Executive Package offers reclining rear seats with massage, heating, ventilation, and a passenger-side ottoman.
