Pikes Peak is one of the most impressive and difficult hill climbs in the U.S., if not in the world. While Mitsubishi has driven the course before in an electric race car, this year they will be bringing a newly upgraded car, dubbed the MiEV Evolution III.

Another day, another over-the-top concept that you can drive in the PlayStation 3 title Gran Turismo 6. In this case, we’ve got Mitsubishi getting in on the virtual car action, with an alternative fuel crossover that looks way too cool to ever go into production.

It seems nearly every contestant in the Mitsubishi Motors Extreme MPG Hypermiling Challenge tried to optimize the car’s aerodynamics by duct taping over gaps at the front of the car between the hood and the fenders and covering over some sections on their vehicle’s front fascia.

In 2012, Jeremy Foley was racing in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb as part of the Evolution Dynamics team when his Mitsubishi Evo went over the edge at the corner known as the “Devil’s Playground.”

The Mitsubishi Eclipse went out of production back in late 2011, but it was long beloved by drivers thanks to its youthful styling, and powerful top-end engine options in the later generation’s GT models. It was, and still is a popular choice for street tuners, though it is still a bit on the heavy side of things.

This plug-in hybrid crossover offers sporty, futuristic styling in a package clearly designed for fuel economy. The XR-PHEV uses a front-wheel drive drivetrain, powered by a 1.1-liter turbocharged MIVEC engine, married to an electric motor and a battery pack.
