Every Daytona 500 Finish: 1979-2013

Written by Kenny Hoeschen | February 24, 2014

The rain-delayed 2014 Daytona 500 was won by Dale Earnhardt Jr. (unless you happen to follow ESPN or Fox News) and the legendary race has given us some incredible finishes in its storied history. Thankfully, an enterprising YouTuber put together a compilation of every Daytona 500 finish from 1979 through 2013.

The video begins with Richard Petty’s victory in 1979 when Cale Yarborough and Donnie Allison took each other out on the final lap allowing Petty, who was trailing by about half a lap in third place, to cruise past them for the win. Jump ahead to 8:33 to see the 1990 finish when Dale Earnhardt, who led for nearly the whole race, blew a tire with just a half lap to go to the finish. One of the most exciting finishes on the reel is from 2010 (at 27:00), when Jamie McMurray was somehow able to hold off a charging Dale Earnhardt Jr. to hold on for the win.

And, if you’re having trouble sleeping, you jump to Dale Jarrett’s win under caution in 2000 beginning at 17:50. Of course, we’re kidding because the Daytona 500 will always be the Great America Race.
