Smart Car Drag Races a Shelby GT500 Mustang

Granted, the Smart car in this drag racing clip has had its engine upgraded, but it’s still got to be humiliating for the guy in the Shelby GT500 Mustang who is almost beaten by the diminutive racer alongside him. This particular Smart has a 1.5-liter Toyota Paseo Sprintex supercharged engine, which is certainly much smaller than the Mustang’s 5.8, but the Smart clearly has the weight advantage. It also helped that the GT 500’s driver wasn’t exactly at the top of his game – GT500s regularly turn in a 1/4 mile time around 12 seconds, and in this case he did it in 13.67.

In the end, the Smart lost to the Shelby by only 0.23 seconds, and that’s only because it sheared the cogs off its blower belt at the start of the race.
