DeLorean DMC-12: Blast from the Past

Written by Paul Strauss | October 20, 2014

While the DeLorean DMC-12 may be best known for its role in the Back to the Future movies, there’s much more to know about this car from the early 1980s. The guys at XCAR Films recently spent some quality time with an unmodified original DMC-12, and share a brief history of this never-to-be-repeated car.

Learn about John DeLorean, how he started the company, the inspiration behind the enigmatic DMC-12, and how it evolved from an early Giugiaro-designed prototype into a Lotus Esprit-based stainless steel car, the car’s market reception, as well as the company’s ultimate demise.

Despite its quality issues, quirks, poor performance and troubled history, there are still few cars that conjure up such an immediate and emotional response as a DeLorean with its gull-wing doors open. I’m disappointed to hear that the original speedometer tops out at 85mph though.
