Tuned VW Golf R Smokes Lambo, BMW, Mercedes

Ordinarily, if you put a Volkswagen Golf R on a drag strip alongside a Lamborghini Gallardo, a BMW M6 or a Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG, the VW wouldn’t stand a chance. But with the right engine and tuning, I guess anything is possible, as the guys from German tuning house HGP proved with their massively upgraded Golf R shown in this video shot at Unlim500+.
Of course it doesn’t hurt that the Golf R is rockin’ a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 power plant sourced from a Passat R36, mated to the seven-speed dual clutch gearbox from an Audi RS3. Still, the M6 has a 729hp engine, the Gallardo has 567hp, and the AMG has a whopping 851hp. But the Golf’s 734hp setup combined with its light weight gives it a distinct advantage over the heavier cars on the track.
Sure, the driver of the Golf R has a much faster reaction time than the others, but even with that taken into consideration, he still would have beaten them all. While there are definitely other cars at the event that had faster times, the Golf R came in 25th out of 82 vehicles overall – and every single one had more than 500 horsepower. Not bad when you consider that the Golf ran a faster 1000 meter run than an E63 AMG, a Nissan GT-R and even a brand new Lamborghini Huracan.
