Jay Leno Wraps His $1 Million+ McLaren P1

Jay Leno is the proud owner of the first $1.15 million McLaren P1 to be imported to the United States. And owning one of the just 375 P1 supercars to be built brings some additional responsibility. One of the first step Leno takes with his new baby is to have it wrapped in a clear film from Protective Film Solutions. This is not the sort of wrap that may car owners select to change their car color (like the pink Bugatti Veyron), but is instead a clear film that protects the entire vehicle.

Leno visits with Ryan Tounsley and his team from PFS who walk through the process of applying the film to the McLaren. They first clean the car and wrap the body panels in an 8 mil wrap that’s been precut specifically for the P1. Of course, when you’re talking about a car like this the result has to be nothing short of perfection. They even apply a hardened acrylic wrap to the windshield to protect it from road debris.

Tounsley says that the average cost to wrap a car is between $1,500 to $2,500 (USD) depending on what the owner wants done and the film should last from 5 to 10 years as long as it’s kept clean. It seems like a great system and makes sense for any special car that you want to keep looking new while driving it on the road. But, if you’re going to wrap your car anyway, I think it’s tempting to also change the color at the same time.
