A First Look at the 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport

Written by Paul Strauss | December 5, 2014

If there’s one SUV that I’m excited about driving in the coming months, it’s the new Land Rover Discovery Sport. The first of the new Discovery series, the Sport builds on the success of the already exceptional Evoque, but offering it in a larger, more family-friendly package, and at a very competitive pricepoint. While the DNA of the Discovery Sport and Evoque are similar, sharing core drivetrain elements, the Discovery is almost 10″ longer, seating up to seven people, and offering greater storage capacity. Naturally, as a Land Rover, it offers plenty of luxury details, while at the same time being able to go off-road.

Recently, James Disdale from UK outlet Auto Express got his hands on one of the first Discovery Sports and took it out for a spin. Keep in mind that the model tested in the video features the 190 horsepower UK spec diesel power plant, while the ones sold here in the U.S. will offer the 240 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine like the one in the Evoque, so his comments about diesel clatter aren’t particularly relevant here. Based on my experience, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost found in the the Evoque is a great engine, especially wedded to ZF’s 9-speed automatic.

We expect to see the first Land Rover Discovery Sports here in the U.S. in early 2015.
