Volkswagen Taos Is a Compact SUV That’s Priced Like a Jetta

Volkswagen is showing off a new compact SUV that will land in the US next summer. The Taos is the entry-level SUV for the VW line and is smaller than the existing Tiguan. While Volkswagen isn’t offering any specifics on pricing, it has said that the vehicle will be as affordable as the Jetta.

The automaker also promises power, space, and technology that’s competitive for the class all at an entry-level price. All versions of the vehicle will feature LED headlights and styling that is influenced by the Tiguan. The Taos is 175.8 inches long, which is 9.3 inches shorter than the Tiguan. The wheelbase is 105.9 inches, and the vehicle is 72.5 inches wide, with a height of 64.4 inches.

Despite being small, it has 99.5 cubic feet of passenger space, which is only 1.6 cubic feet less than the two-row Tiguan. The vehicle will use a new 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder producing 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque. Front-wheel-drive models will feature an eight-speed transmission with all-wheel-drive versions using a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Volkswagen Digital Cockpit and pushbutton start come standard, while options include a heated leatherette steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and an 8-way power driver’s seat. Volkswagen offers an available central eight-inch touchscreen with voice command for the premium BeatsAudio system. A suite of Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE of driver safety and convenience features are also available on all models, including Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Braking, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Keeping System, Adaptive Cruise Control with a Stop and Go feature, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, High Beam Control, Adaptive Front-lighting, and Park Distance Control.

The Taos will come in S, SE, and SEL trim levels, and is expected to launch in North America in the summer of 2021.
