Why the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger Is a Gamechanger

Except for regenerative braking, most electric vehicles have no way to recharge their batteries while driving. The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger has an onboard generator, which adds power back to the battery pack when needed. The result is an electric drivetrain with extraordinary driving range.
Unlike other hybrid-electric vehicles, the Ramcharger’s gas engine isn’t connected to the wheels. Instead, the 3.6-liter V6 engine drives an electrical generator, which feeds energy to the battery and powers the electric motors. This sort of configuration is known as a series hybrid. Ram has its sights set on a 690-mile driving range with this setup. Realistically, you’ll probably get a couple hundred miles of range out of the 92 kWh battery pack, and the gas engine will be burning fuel to recharge the batteries to give you all that range. Plus, you won’t search for a public charger on longer trips. In addition, its battery pack supports 400-volt DC fast charging to add about 50 miles of range in about 10 minutes.
There’s a 250 kW electric drive unit up front and a 238 kW unit in the rear. RAM says the Ramcharger’s all-wheel drivetrain will produce 663 horsepower and 615 lb-ft. of torque, launching the truck from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. Those numbers are just shy of the performance numbers of the Hellcat-powered RAM TRX. Plus, the Ramcharger can tow up to 14,000 pounds and has a payload capacity of 2625 pounds.
Beyond its unique drivetrain, the Ramcharger looks a whole lot like other Ram 1500 trucks. However, it does ride on a different platform that Stellantis designed specifically for body-on-frame electric vehicles. Expect the first Ramchargers to start rolling off the line in 2025. Buyers interested in reserving the truck can do so with a $100 “membership” charge on the RamRev website.
