BMW M5 Touring Station Wagon Is Coming to America

If you ever wanted to set a trap for a bunch of automotive journalists, put out some tables of free food and park a high-performance station wagon in the middle of them. While many food choices would do the trick, the number of wagons to choose from is quite limited, especially here in the U.S. Thankfully, BMW is about to change that with the news that the new BMW M5 Touring wagon is coming to America.

While it doesn’t possess the old M5’s 5-liter V10 engine, the new M5 Touring will pack a powerful BMW M Hybrid drivetrain, similar to the one in the BMW M Hybrid V8 GTP race car. That track beast has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 640 horsepower and 479 lb-ft. of torque. I wouldn’t doubt if the production car outdoes those numbers since there aren’t any racing class restrictions in play. We can also expect the typical M series perks, like performance suspension, brakes, and aerodynamic upgrades. And it’s clear from the photos that this wagon has quad exhaust and rolls on big sport rims.

In addition to sharing the camouflaged teaser photos shown here, BMW says it’s been testing the M5 Touring in a variety of on-road environments and plans to fine-tune its systems on the Nürburgring’s famed Nordschleife circuit. It looks like the Audi RS 6 Avant and Mercedes-AMG E63 will have a new competitor now that the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is no longer available.
