2019 Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition Still Isn’t Quite the 86 We Wanted

I’m not sure why Subaru and Toyota continue to avoid the one thing that BRZ and 86 fans continue to clamor for – a little more power to make the car faster and more fun to drive. But the companies simply won’t give us what we want. The new Toyota 86 TRD special edition has the same old 205 hp Boxer four under the hood that every factory Subaru BRZ, Toyota 86 and Scion FR-S before it has had.

Extra power or not, this version is heralded as the “ultimate performance” 86 and comes with Brembo brakes, SACHS dampers, a TRD Body Kit, Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, and a TRD exhaust system along with other unique details. If it just had another 50 hp, it would be the perfect 86.

The car can be optioned with keyless entry with push-button start, heated power mirrors, a matte black rear wing with color-keyed end plates, and heated leather seats. Dual-zone A/C is an option, as is an automatic transmission if the six-speed manual is beyond your capabilities. A new color called Neptune and a black/red interior is also offered. The car looks fantastic, and will be limited to 1,418 units at a starting price of $32,420. It will hit dealerships this August.
