The classic Shelby GT500 is one of the all-time most desirable sports cars. Originals are extremely hard to come by, but even some modern reproductions can be expensive. Built by Classic Recreations, this American Heart Association Life is Why Centennial Edition Carbon Fiber Shelby GT500CR isn’t cheap. Still, the few who can afford one will be helping to support an excellent cause.
Classic Recreation will build just 10 of these exclusive sports cars to celebrate 100 years of the American Heart Association’s good deeds (and Carroll Shelby’s recent 100th birthday). The shiny black and red-striped Mustangs have exposed carbon fiber cladding sculpted to match the classic 1967 Shelby GT500, and those lightweight body parts mean it weighs just 3200 pounds.
These unique custom-built cars are powered by a Magnuson VMP Supercharged 5.0L Gen 3 Coyote engine that outputs approximately 800 horsepower. Connected to the rear wheels by a Tremec T56 Magnum 6-speed manual, it’ll launch from a dead stop to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 189 mph. The aerospace-grade carbon fiber body is wrapped around a steel structure for crash safety. It’s also got a modern double-wishbone suspension with adjustable coilovers. The whole shebang rolls on staggered chrome wheels with 6-piston front and 4-piston rear Wilwood brakes.
Inside, you’ll find Carroll Shelby Scat Rally Series 1000 High-back Seats with red stitching. The dash features authentic Carroll Shelby Signature Gauges with white faces and red markings. Complementing the classic three-spoke wood and metal steering wheel are modern touches like cupholders and a Focal audio system with a touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto support. The trio of Shelby billet metal pedals looks fantastic, too.
Each car is priced at $625,000, with $100,000 from every sale going to the Life is Why™ Campaign, dedicated to supporting the American Heart Association’s investments in lifesaving research and education initiatives to help reduce and eventually eliminate heart disease and strokes.
