Must Watch: Fiat Abarth Race

The Fiat 500 Abarth is great fun to drive and performs incredibly on the track, especially given its diminutive size. But how many people actually get to take one on the track and compete against other drivers?

Abarth held a competition in late 2013, choosing 28 rookie drivers for the race. Stuart McKay of The BHP Project was lucky and skilled enough to make it to the finals, beating out 50,000 other entrants from across Europe. Those 28 racers were then pitted against each other in Italy to choose the best six. Again, McKay made the cut, and he’s documented his experience and the on-board video of his opportunity to race in the Trofeo Abarth Championship Race at Monza. He qualified at sixth in his class and 14th overall out of 25 cars on the grid.

It’s worth watching the whole video of the race. Things seem to be going quite well, until the 13:00 mark when McKay misses a corner and Abarths going flying past. Keep watching after that to see how he ended up while pushing to make up the lost time.

No word, yet, on whether Abarth will hold the event again in 2014. But, if you buy a Fiat 500 Abarth, you’ll get to drive one on the track also thanks to Fiat’s Abarth Experience.
