Local Motors Launches Sports Car Design Challenge

Written by Kenny Hoeschen | August 9, 2014

Local Motors, a car company that makes the crazy off-road Rally Fighter and also seems really good at creating other unique vehicles like their upcoming 3D-printed car, has announced a challenge to help them design a new sports car platform. The contest is designed to engage sports coupe and racing fans in the design of a new vehicle platform, with more than $10,000 (USD) in prize money to be awarded. The contest is underway now and ends on August 28, 2014, with winners to be announced on September 18.

The new platform may become Local Motors’ next vehicle: a high-performance, street-legal track car, and a full-featured sport coupe that reach the market in less than two years. The company hopes to achieve a balance of performance and design in an affordable package, focusing on creating a stripped-down track version of a two-seater sports coupe.

Check out the full rules and requirements for submissions on the Local Motors site. We’re thinking something along the lines of something from Wacky Races, but maybe we’re not that great at car design. Take a look at the current set of submissions here (with some of our favorites shown below), some of them look pretty awesome.
