2021 Genesis G80 Has Awesome Sportback Looks

Between the G70, G80, and G90, Genesis makes some very substantial and well-equipped cars. With the GV80 crossover on the way, they’re only going to expand their market appeal. Now, the Korean luxury brand is working on a big update to the mid-size car that started it all.

Up front, the 2021 G80 sports a large and distinctive mesh Genesis grill, flanked by dual-blade LED headlamps. I love the floating roof design, which reminds me of the oh-so-good Mercedes E-Class Coupe, though in this case the B- and C-pillars are just well hidden by black trim. Both the cornering lights and tail lamps repeat the headlight design, drawing your eye cleanly from the front to the back of the car, while the sportback shape and trunk spoiler give it a dramatically sportier look than the current-gen G80.

Inside, the new G80 is even better than before, with a strikingly minimal dash design, accented with premium leather, wood, and aluminum, and highlighted by an ultrawide 14.5″ display that’s mounted high up to minimize eye movement for the driver.

We don’t have details yet on the G80’s performance specs, though it’s almost surely going to share the 2.5-liter inline-4 and 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 headed to the GV80, producing somewhere around 300 and 400 horsepower, respectively. Sadly, the big poppa V8 will be sent to pasture for this generation. It’s still riding on a rear-wheel drive platform, and all-wheel drive should be available as an option as well.

Expect more details on the 2021 G80 in the next couple of months, as the car gets ready to hit North American dealerships in mid-to-late 2020.
