Volvo’s Inflatable Child Seat Concept: Deflate and Stow

If you’ve got young children, you know how much of a pain it can be to travel with a child seat for your car. The seats are bulky, and take up valuable space in your vehicle when not in use. Renowned for their safety innovations, Volvo is now developing a safety seat for children which can be inflated and deflated to minimize storage space and weight.

Volvo’s Inflatable Child Seat weighs about 11 pounds and has a built-in, battery-powered air pump. When not in use, the rear-facing inflatable child seat fits neatly inside a backpack. It takes just 40 seconds to completely inflate or deflate. It’s even got wireless Bluetooth connectivity, so theoretically, it could be activated remotely – though we’re unsure why you’d want to do that.

It’s only a concept design at this point, but it seems like a really smart idea. Hopefully it will go into production at some point.
